I Bloom holds a special place in my journey as an artist. It was one of the first paintings where I felt my own artistic voice beginning to emerge—the combination of realism and abstraction, expressive color, symbolism, nature, and the human eye as a point of connection.
I painted it during a time when I was thinking deeply about what it means to continue growing when life and the body don’t follow the path we imagined. The flowers, bee, and figure became symbols of transformation of allowing what has fallen away to become part of what grows next.
I wrote this poem alongside the painting:
I Bloom
Through my eyes
you cannot see
the disease that has
taken hold of me
My mind goes dark
as pain erodes me
paralyzing fear
take residence
like enemies within
versions of me fall
to the ground
now nutrients for the soul
a new seed blooms
from ashes of past
Strength grows
guided by light
Rooted in hope
I find strength
I grow stronger
nurtured in love
I bloom
